Online content creator and entertainer Gonyeti, arrested over a skit
Online content creator Gonyeti, real name Samantha Kureya together with partner comedian Sharon Magi Chideu have been arrested over a skirt they featured wearing regalia that resembled the ZRP uniform. In the skirt, the duo imitated presumed acts of the ZRP and the army on protesters during the violent crackdowns. The issue dates back to 2016 when the skirt was produced.
I have said it again and again on this platform that people have to mind the content they create and share whether in text, image, audio or video. Some content can backfire if caution is disregarded. The information we have so far cite wearing regalia that resemble police uniform as the reason for the arrest. But was it? What if it was the nature of content they shared that triggered their arrest? As far as I am concerned, the police and army is currently hard on anything that seems to threaten their image especially when it relates to January violent crackdown. Look at the dressing, it does not seem to look close to army or ZRP uniform, does it?
So the big lesson we are given here is to mind what we share. Like I previously said, social media is now a delicate and dangerous place. Post anything and it can backfire unexpectedly. Well, Gonyeti and fellow Bustop TV comedian Sharon Magi Chideu were fined $20 (I think its RTGS$20 not USD$20) for criminal nuisance involving violating provisions of the Police Act, but who knows, if you do it you may face a harder punishment.
