Its official, access to the internet and social media granted in Zimbabwe
Many Zimbabweans who depend on local based internet service providers have had a very terrible week starting on the 16th of January 2019 until now. Access to the internet was blocked several times following orders from the office of minister in the president's office. When access to the internet was later granted, access to social media platforms such as facebook, twitter and whatsapp remained closed. Many resorted to the use of VPNs to access the blocked platforms while others alternatively used telegram which has similar features to whatsapp. Now the good news is that access to the internet and social media platforms has been granted!
This follows after a declaration by the High Court of Zimbabwe that the directives to block access to the internet and social media by the minister of state was illegal as the minister does not possess the authority to issue such orders. Nevertheless, not all internet service providers have given access to social media platforms yet. So far Econet, the ISP with the largest subscriber base in Zimbabwe and ZOL have already given their subscribers access to the internet and social media. Other government owned ISPs including NetOne, have social media access still blocked. Perhaps they are still waiting fro a directive from the government or they are simply slow, but consequently they will open access following the court ruling. If you are a subscriber to one of these slow highlighted ISPs you may have to keep checking, as access can be granted any time.
We will continue to give you updates on this, but if your ISP has already given access, welcome back to social media! This time, behave well hahaha..
