Domestic data saving techniques to use with your phone or computer
With the advent of the internet as a resource base for research, communication, entertainment and information gathering, there is now a higher demand for data even for in-house usage. With the cost of data still higher in many African countries particularly here in Zimbabwe, it is very important to know and apply different data saving techniques that curb on-the-device data guzzling, thereby reducing the general spending on data.
I am sorry that I am not going to use pictures, but when I find extra time I will preprare the pics and upload where necessary. The list below include a number of simple techniques that I tried and have proved to work in saving data on mobile and computers.
Restricting Background Data Usage
This is one of the most common techniques that one can use to save on data usage. If you have an android phone, this is quiet simple to do. All one has to do to turn on restrict mobile data usage is to go to the settings on the android device. To access the settings one has to look for a gear icon labled settings on the screen and click. The easiest way to access it sometimes can be to swipe downwards from the top on the android phone, usually one would see the gear icon at the top right.
Now, after accessing the settings, look for a menu labled Data Usage and click. If one clicks this menu and scroll downloads, usually there is a list of applications. On some phones you may actually see a check box labled restrict background data which you can just tick to apply the setting. Some phones only allow for restricting of mobile data usage for specific applications. To do this you need to click the application from the list that apears after choosing the Data Usage menu. Usually after choosing the application, you will see this setting to restric background data.
What about on computer Is this possible?
Yes it is also very possible to restrict data usage on computers. I cannot explain the procedures for every operating systems to keep the article under control in terms of size and focus. But let me explain briefly on how this can be achieved on windows 10 since it is the latest for windows. By the way, it is very important that when a new operating system is realeased you move over, you upgrade. This comes with a lot of security benefits and probably more settings that allows you to tweak your operating system. So on Windows 10, one can restrict background data by turning on what we call metered connection. If you turn this setting on, windows will automatically restrict background data usages by stopping applications and windows from downloading updates in the background. This serves you Gigabytes of data, believe me.
How to turn on metered connection on windows 10
Turning on metered connection is very simple to do. All you need to do is to first connect to the network on which you wish to effect this setting. Then from the wifi menu, usually on the task bar bottom right, right click on the the wifi menu. Click on Open Network and Internet settings, then you will be take to a window where you can actually see the the connected network and available setting. Then click on change connection settings from the available settings and you will taken to a page of network properties for the connected network. From the list of options, you can see a setting labled set as metered connection which you can click to turn on or off. Turn it on and you are done.
The setting can also be accessed by simply clicking on the network menu from the task bar and click on on the network you want to effect the changes for, usually the one you are already connected to, then click on properties. This will take you to the same page.
Avoid installing too many application
This works for both mobile phones and computers. Too many applications that use the internet mean that there are more calls for updates and upgrades and this gulps data in quicker than you can ever imagine. Some people never use applications that they have installed and yet data and space are being wasted. Sometimes you need to visit your list of applications and find out those applications you genuinely need and those that you do not need. Then uninstall everything that you do not need, I personally do this! You will see that data will be saved, space will be freed and speed and perfomance will increase.
Turn Off Application Notifications and Synchronization
Yes when you are on limited data you may need to turn off disable applications from sending you notifications unnecessarily. Now because the type of application we use on mobile phones vary from person to person, I will give a general way of doing this.
Controlling Notifications and synchronization on android phones
On Android phone if one long presses the application, there is an application info menu that appears at the top, from that you may see ways of turning off notifications. But usually the method of restricting background data must do the trick for most applications. I had left another method that come handy for me sometimes. This is the method that works by optimizing google play store settings on android devices. You may have wondered why your phone automatically download and install staff that you did not even choose sometimes. This you can stop by changing you google paly store setting.
To optimize your play store settings, open google play store app. Then click on settings. The settings menu can sometimes be hidden, but you can access it by swipping from left to right on the screen after open google play app. Now after clicking the settings. There are all the settings you need to controll notifications, to change download preferences and to turn on and off auto download. So you turn off all updates notifications if you want. Then on app download preferences you can put the setting on ask me every time. Turn off auto updates.
Lastly you to control notifications and synchronization on android you may need to logout of social sites so that you will not get notification as this kind of synchronization costs you data. You can save password on browser so that it will be easy to login instead of leaving without logging out. Some also say opera mini saves on data, I have not tried this, but you can try it.
Controlling Notifications and synchronization on windows 10
On windows 10 all you need to do to turn off notifications for some applications is to go to the control panel. You can easily do this by clicking the startup menu and then clicking on settings. Now, click on System menu, usually the first on the list, then choose notifications and actions and scroll down until you see a heading labled Get notifications from these senders. Notice a list of applications against which there is option to turn on or off notifications. Turn off for every application that you do not wish to get notifications from.
Some applications have settings where you can disable them from updating or going on the network. Again if you are using an anti virus such as eset smart security, you have the freedom to stop certain application from accessing the internet. Let may say, It is very wise to to record all changes that you may have done to save data so that if you want to revert you will easily know where you made some changes.
Other handy method of data serving
Well to save on your time reading this article, I quickly run through other handy method that are useful in saving data on mobile phones and android. These are are some of the methods that you may probaly not think of.
Muting whatsapp status
kkkkkkk, let me laugh the Zimbabwean way, but seriously, there is always a group of people in your contact list who uploads a lot of data consuming whatsapp status and they do it just too frequently. My friend just mute their status. Right click on their status and chose mute. So that when they sent next time you wont recieve a notifications and so that whatsapp will not download the staus. This also ensures you wont click their status by mistake.
Using night bundles to download
Night bundles are cheaper, so instead of downloading during the day, schedule all things that you may need to download during the day and download at night. The other advantage of downloading at night is that connection is generally stronger at night hence download won't take time. The problem is that you love sleeping, kkkk, joking.
Compress audio, video and image size before uploading.
Uploading large files definitely gulps data. Why not save by compressing using available tools before uploading or sharing.
I wrote this using information from my experiences not research. The reason being that I intended to give you more practical information, so I think this helps.
