21st century learning, The Global Classroom, Level Up Village
To be successful in the jobs of the future, students need to apply learning across various disciplines and collaborate across national, social and economic divides. Level Up village has arguably managed to do that in 2017. By participating in their courses, students not only develop cutting-edge STEAM Skills, but also the softer skills of global collaboration and communication, now targeted in ISTE, Common Core and NGSS standards
What is Level Up Village
Level Up Village is a social impact company based in Old Greenwich, Connecticut that delivers pioneering Global STEAM (STEM + Arts) enrichment courses promoting design thinking and one-to-one collaboration on real-world problems between students from around the world. Launched in 2012, LUV runs courses during school, after-school and in the summer for students at more than 150 U.S. schools, with 30+ International Global Partner organizations in more than 20 countries.
The following are some of the courses offered by Level Up Village.
GLOBAL CONVERSATIONS: MALALA YOUSAFZAI
Literature, Global Citizenship
Together, with their classmates and their global partners, students read and discuss I Am Malala and explore cultural perceptions among both countries via video letter exchange, with a focus on cultural stereotypes, education, leadership and community service.
GLOBAL CONVERSATIONS: THE GIVER
Social Issues Research, Global Citizenship
In this course, students will read and discuss Lois Lowry’s The Giver and participate in a video letter exchange with students in a Global Partner classroom. Together, they will define and evaluate the “ideal” society, the role of government in daily life and social justice issues – all through a cross cultural lens.
GLOBAL DOCTORS: DNA
Grades 3-5 and 6-9
Learn about DNA and, with their Global Partner student, how genetics can be influenced for better or worse by different environmental conditions.
Environmental Studies and Presentation Skills
Students and their global partners become environmental detectives, learning about different animal adaptations around the world and creating a shared green-screen presentation on an indigenous species of their choosing!
3D Printing, CAD Design and Engineering
Grades 3-5 and 6-p
Join us on an adventure to transform the world as we know it! Students in this class will learn about one of the most innovative technologies of our time – 3D Printing – and how to use Computer Aided Design (CAD) software to design to build solar-powered flashlights together with their Global Partner student!
GLOBAL LANGUAGE LAB
Virtual Exchange with a focus on languages
Available in Arabic or Spanish, this course offers students a guided language, cultural, and foreign language exchange on topics such as sports, food, hobbies, travel and career aspirations. Students practice their foreign language skills by engaging in meaningful conversation with native speakers from across the globe.
Video Game Design and Pre-coding
Grades K-2 and 3-5
Students learn the building blocks of coding using MIT’s “Scratch” video game design platform. Together, with their Global Partners, they create animations and video games, while learning sequencing skills and expressing themselves digitally!
Chemistry and Engineering
In this course, students study the chemical properties of water, the water cycle, and the engineering design of aquifers and filtration systems to better understand how water systems can be polluted and purified. In collaboration with partners from developing countries, students engage in hands-on research on global water issues and propose solutions to these problems.
GLOBAL SOUND ARTISTS
Music and Global Citizenship
Students take a hands-on journey through the science of sound as they learn to build their own guitar, spinning drum and pan pipe and establish an understanding of vibration, pitch and volume. They listen to and learn to appreciate, culturally diverse music and exchange video messages each class period with their Global Partners.
GLOBAL STORYBOOK ENGINEERS JR.
Literacy and Engineering
An innovative exploration of engineering for our youngest students through the lens of folk tales, stories and myths from different cultures while exploring how they can "rescue" their storybook heroes by building spaghetti towers (using materials such as noodles and marshmallows), boats, BrushBots and more!
GLOBAL WATER CRISIS
Water issues around the world, Engineering & Global Exchange
In this course, students and their global partners will reflect on their water use and how they can be a part of the solution to the global water crisis. They will work on a hands-on research project and learn how to create 3D designs to help solve these global problems.
GLOBAL WEB DESIGNERS
Coding, Web Design and Environmental Studies
Grades 3-5 and 6-9
I will write another article very soon highlighting the things that Level Up Village has managed to cover in Zimbabwe so far and the world at large.
